THE COLONY, TX – Yunxuan (Michelle) Zhang fired a 2-under-par, 35-35–70 in the second round of the Volunteers of America Classic Girls Championship. This puts her at 8-under-par for the Championship and with a four shot lead.
The course proved to be a tougher test today with only seven players shooting under-par. Zhang started 3-under through six holes, but had a rocky stretch with bogeys on holes #7, #8 and #10. She was able to bounce back though and card two more birdies on the back nine.
Zhang was a participant in this years U.S. Women’s Open at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in North Carolina. “I got into the US Open this year and I [learned] you have to put yourself into the right mindset instead of just hoping to win, everyone is hoping to win,” said Michelle when speaking on the potential of earning an LPGA Tour exemption tomorrow.
One key to the past two rounds for Zhang has been her putting. “Two weeks ago I saw Xander Schauffele doing this cool thing with his putting and I thought I’d try it out … it ended up helping me out a lot”.
The final group led by Zhang will tee off at 9:50 a.m. tomorrow morning. Maggie Ni and Maelynn Kim will join Michelle in that final group.
Ashleen Kaur and Emma Thompson tied for today's low round at 4-under-par. Kaur, who shot 33-35–68, recently won the AJGA C.T. Pan Junior Championship and announced her commitment to play at Baylor University this fall. She is currently tied for fourth. Emma Thompson, who shot 34-34–68, currently sits at T10.
Tribute Golf Links hosted the first 36 holes of the Championship. Thirty-three (33) players made the cut and will compete in the final round on Old American Golf Club, the host site for the LPGA Tour Volunteers of America Classic. Tomorrow’s final round course set-up will simulate the final round of the LPGA Tour event.
An exemption into the 2022 LPGA Tour Volunteers of America Classic on September 29 - October 2 will be awarded at the conclusion of the Championship.
The Volunteers of America Classic Girls Championship is supported by Jerry J. Ransom.
