THE COLONY, TX – Yunxuan (Michelle) Zhang carded an opening round 6-under-par, 33-33–66 to take an early 2-stroke lead at the 2022 Volunteers of America Classic Girls Championship.
Zhang teed off at 10:10 alongside defending champion, Avery Zweig, and the 2021 runner-up Farah O’Keefe. “I just made a lot of putts, and got some lucky bounces,” said Zhang. She will look to keep the momentum going tomorrow when she tees it up for round two. The recent high school graduate will start her collegiate career at Southern Methodist University this fall.
Zweig and O’Keefe also had solid rounds today of 3-under-par, 69. They are currently tied for fourth and only three strokes off the lead.
Maelynn Kim, who was as low as 7-under-par today, will try to catch Zhang after a first round 30-38–68, 4-under-par. On the front nine, Kim carded six birdies en route to a T-2 finish at the end of the day. “I was able to stick a lot of my approach shots close to the hole on the front nine… and just [played] smart golf and stayed focused because I knew the heat was going to get to me,” Kim stated after finishing her round today. Summer Lee is the other player tied for second place at 4-under-par. She made five birdies during her round to put her at the top of the leaderboard.
Tribute Golf Links will host the first 36 holes of the Championship before a cut is made to the low 30 scores and ties. The remaining players will play the final round on Old American Golf Club, the host site for the LPGA Tour Volunteers of America Classic. Wednesday’s final round course set-up will simulate the LPGA Tour event.
This year’s Championship will once again award an exemption into the LPGA Tour Volunteers of America Classic on September 29 - October 2, 2022.
The Volunteers of America Classic Girls Championship is supported by Jerry J. Ransom.
